Be Breast Healthy!

Congratulations! You have taken the first step toward being breast healthy. Being aware of breast cancer, understanding your personal risk of the disease, and being proactive to help reduce your breast cancer risk are all important steps in the journey toward breast health.

Part of being proactive is scheduling your mammogram! All women's health organizations agree that women should perform regular breast self-exams and receive annual clinical breast exams. After the age of 40, an annual screening mammogram is recommended to identify breast cancers, therefore improving your risk for survival.

3D Mammography

Staff and 3D Mammography technology

At The Breast Imaging Center at Cartersville Medical Center, we are dedicated to finding breast cancer at its earliest stage. 3D Mammography is a proven screening exam that results in 40% improvement in cancer detection while decreasing patient call backs.

Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, 3D mammography exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing. Also, a breast stabilization system, which is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram without compromising image quality, workflow or dose, is an added feature of the new system now available to patients at The Breast Imaging Center.

3D Mammography increases diagnostic confidence with its exceptional images and has the potential to increase compliance for the countless women who have reported avoiding regular mammograms due in large part to the fear of discomfort associated with breast compression.

Overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 3D exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.

The 3D exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the tomosynthesis-dimensional portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. The exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.

The Breast Imaging Center at Cartersville Medical Center is located inside The Hope Center, Suite 107, at 100 Market Place Boulevard. If you would like to schedule a 3D mammography exam, or have questions about this important breast health procedure, please call (855) 828-5136.

  • Patients will see little difference between a conventional 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram. The exam takes about the same amount of time—a 3.7 second scan time—and the positioning is the same. The real difference is in the information available to the doctor.
  • A good analogy for 3D Mammography is like thinking of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all of the pages—but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers.
