Possible Stroke Mimics

Other disease processes may mimic or look like a stroke. Here are a few examples.

Hypoglycemia
• Check a fingerstick glucose (FSG)

Post-ictal State after a Seizure • May experience altered level of consciousness

Migraine
• Do they have a previous history of migraines

Tumor
• Different from a stroke since tumor symptoms worsen over weeks to months

Abscess
• Patients typically have a history of fevers, dental infections, congenital heart disease, infections of the face or scalp, or prior head injury/skull fracture.

Subdural Hematoma
• Results from an injury or trauma
• Elderly and chronic alcoholics are at highest risk

Intoxication (Alcohol or Drug-Induced)
• Often present with similar symptoms
